چکیده
PNT Jan/Feb 2009 Vol. 13 No. 1 ABSTRACT Developmental care is a relatively new concept in neonatal intensive care within the South African context. The term ‘developmental care’ describes a group of interventions focused at reducing stress levels of the preterm and sick neonate in order to reduce negative short and long term outcomes. These negative outcomes directly affect infant morbidity and neurodevelopment. Although it has been widely implemented internationally, implementation in South Africa seemed problematic. A formal research study using an intervention research design was conducted to determine how developmental care could be implemented in the South African context and this article discusses the guidelines for implementation drawn from the conclusion of the study. Effect of Developmental Care on Preterm Neonates’ Neurodevelopmental Outcomes at 12 Months of Age
Background: Premature birth and subsequent admission to the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) may impair the neurodevelopment of neonates. The present study aimed to determine the effect of developmental care on neurodevelopmental outcomes of newborns. Methods: This quasi-experimental study was conducted on 105 premature neonates (in three groups of 35 newborns). The control group receiv...
متن کاملA Prospective Study on QT Dispersion in Neonates: A New Risk Factor
Background: QT dispersion (QTd) especially after ischemic heart disease and myocardial infarction is a prognostic predictor of mortality, in adult medicine. Objective: This study was undertaken to determine the correlation between QT dispersion and neonatal stress. Neonates were divided into 3 groups: normal term (30 cases), normal preterm (30 cases) and sick neonates (36 cases), born between ...
متن کاملEvaluation of Risk Factors for Retinopathy of Prematurity in Preterm Neonates
Background: The most common cause of preventable blindness in children is retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). The most important risk factors for this disease are preterm delivery and low birth weight (LBW). This research was performed to evaluate the prevalence ofand risk factors for ROP in preterm neonates. Methods: Our research was a cross-sectional descriptive and retrospective study conduct...
متن کاملHome-based Care Needs of Preterm Infants Discharged Early from the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit: A Descriptive Qualitative Study
Background: Prematurity could result in the long admission of the neonate to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) and development of some complications for both mother and newborn. The early discharge programs make the neonatal transference to home much easier and are beneficial to both parents and newborns. However, there are limited studies investigating the real needs of the preterm neonat...
متن کاملThe Efficacy of a Protocolized Nursing Care on Nasal Skin Breakdown in Preterm Neonates Receiving Nasal Continuous Positive Airway Pressure
Background: Nasal continuous positive airway pressure (NCPAP) is an effective method of ventilation in newborns with respiratory distress syndrome (RDS). Using an appropriate nasal skin care protocol is identical to prevention or reduction of nasal skin breakdown in those who receive NCPAP. This study aimed to investigate the effectiveness of an evidence-based clinical care protocol on nasal sk...
